How to Check Car Insurance Status Online by Vehicle Number
7 min read
Insure Blog

Every car owner in India needs an active insurance policy to drive legally. But what if you have lost the policy document, want to confirm whether the policy is still valid, or are buying a used car and want to verify the seller's claim about an active cover? Knowing how to check car insurance status online by vehicle number solves all of these situations in less than two minutes.

There are two reliable ways to check insurance by vehicle number in 2026. The Parivahan portal, run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and your insurer's own website or app. Each method has its own steps and strengths. Whether you are a current owner, a used-car buyer, or someone who simply forgot their policy details, this guide gives you the full picture.

Why Check Insurance Status?

Verifying your car insurance status and details ensures due legal compliance under the Motor Vehicles Act and prevents hefty traffic fines and non-compliance penalties. It also helps you track renewal deadlines to protect your No Claim Bonus (NCB) and confirms active financial coverage before any road emergency.

There are five common situations where you may want to verify a vehicle insurance status online:

  • Lost policy document: You cannot find the policy PDF or printed copy. A quick online check confirms whether the policy is still active.

  • Used-car purchase: Before buying a used car, you can verify the seller's claim about a valid policy.

  • Renewal date check: If you do not remember when your policy expires, the online check shows the exact end date.

  • After an accident or claim: During a claim with another car involved, you may want to verify the other driver's policy details.

  • Police or RTO checks: If stopped by traffic police and you cannot produce the policy, an online check on your phone is accepted as proof in most states.

Insurance Status Check on Parivahan Portal

The Parivahan portal is part of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' digital vehicle services platform. It is the same portal used for RC checks, tax payments, and other vehicle services.

Here are the steps for Parivahan insurance status verification.

  • Visit the official Parivahan portal website. Click on the ‘Informational Services” option and then click on ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’
  • Log in with your account or create a new one.
  • Enter the vehicle registration number and the captcha code shown on the screen.
  • Submit. The portal displays a summary of the vehicle, including the owner's name, vehicle class, RC details, and insurance status.
  • Look for the "Insurance Validity" line to see whether the policy is active and till which date.

Note: Unlike basic RTO lookups, the official Parivahan portal will display the exact Insurer Name and Policy Number alongside the expiration date, making it an excellent resource for pulling lost coverage details.

Insurance Status Check on Insurer Website or Application

If you remember which insurer issued your policy, the fastest way to check is directly on the insurer's website or app. Every major insurer in India has a self-service portal for the same. The steps to check insurance details on the insurer’s website are similar across all major insurers. Here is how you can check your insurance details online:

  • Visit the insurer's website or app. Log in using your registered mobile number, email, or policy number.
  • Go to the section that displays your active policy. This dashboard will display your active and expired policies
  • Click on the relevant policy to see the full schedule, coverage details, premium paid, and validity dates.

You can also check insurance online by registration number on most insurer apps. Simply enter the car's number on the home page, and the app fetches your policy details. This method shows the deepest level of policy information. You can see add-ons, IDV, claim history, and even download the policy document directly.

What Details Can You See When Checking an Insurance Online?

The information you can see when checking a car insurance online varies by source. Here is a quick comparison.

VAHAN portal:

  • Vehicle owner name
  • Vehicle class and make
  • RC validity
  • Insurance validity date
  • Fitness certificate status (for commercial vehicles)
  • Insurer Name and Policy Number

Insurer website or app:

  • Full policy schedule
  • All add-ons selected
  • IDV declared
  • Claim history
  • Premium payment record
  • Renewal due date

For most purposes, the Parivahan portal is often sufficient. For deeper details, only the insurer's own portal can show everything.

Insurance Not Showing? Common Troubleshooting and Fixes

Sometimes the online check returns no result or incorrect information. Here are the most common reasons for encountering an error and quick fixes that you can do.

Recently issued policy: It takes 7 to 14 days for new policies to appear on the Parivahan portal. Wait a few days and try again.

Wrong registration number: Even one character mistake returns a blank result. Double-check the RC number.

Lapsed policy: If the policy expired and was not renewed, the Parivahan portal will not show an active status.

Data sync issues: Sometimes the insurer's data has not reached the central database. Contact the insurer to confirm.

Pending RC transfer: If you bought a used car and the RC transfer is incomplete, VAHAN may still show the old owner's details.

Captcha or OTP issues: Try a different browser or use the official mobile app instead.

If all checks fail, contact your insurer's helpline. They can confirm the policy status directly and resend the policy document.

FAQs

Q. Can I check the insurance status of a vehicle registered in another state?

Yes. Both the Parivahan portal and the mParivahan mobile application pool data from a centralized national registry called VAHAN. This means you can check the insurance validity of a vehicle registered in any Indian state or Union Territory using just the vehicle number, regardless of where you are currently located.

Q. Why does the Parivahan portal show my insurance is active, but my insurer says otherwise?

This is typically a data synchronisation delay. When you renew or buy a policy, your insurer pushes that data to the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB), which then updates the Parivahan database. If you recently cancelled a policy or if a payment bounced, Parivahan might take a few weeks to show the updated ‘Expired’ status, while your insurer's internal servers reflect the cancellation immediately. Always treat your insurer’s active portal as the ultimate source of truth.

Q.  Can I check the insurance status of a vehicle if I only have the chassis number or engine number?

Yes, but you cannot use the standard ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’ public lookup for this. To check via engine or chassis number, you need to log into the Parivahan website, go to the official RC status or online application section, and input the last 5 digits of both numbers. Alternatively, if you know the specific insurance company, their customer portal can map your policy using the full engine and chassis numbers.

Q. Will checking a vehicle’s insurance status reveal the owner’s phone number or address?

No. To comply with digital privacy and data protection norms in India, the public Parivahan and IIB portals mask sensitive personal information. You will be able to see the vehicle's technical details, the policy numbers, and the expiration dates, but the owner's full address, mobile number, and email ID will remain completely hidden.

Q. I just bought a brand-new car. How long will it take for the insurance to show up online?

For brand-new vehicles, the registration number is generated after the insurance policy is mapped to the chassis number. Once the permanent registration number is allotted by the RTO, it typically takes 7 to 10 working days for the insurer’s data to cleanly map onto the Parivahan portal. During this short gap, carrying your physical or digital policy copy in the vehicle is mandatory.

Q. Can I use a screenshot of the Parivahan insurance status to claim tax benefits or corporate reimbursements?

No. While a live digital view directly inside the official DigiLocker or mParivahan app is completely valid and legally accepted by traffic police under the IT Act, a basic phone screenshot or photo of the portal is not recognised as legal proof. For corporate tax exemptions, lease claims, or accounting audits, you must submit the formal tax invoice and the comprehensive policy schedule downloaded directly from your insurer's portal.

Q. What should I do if the vehicle number search says "Vehicle Details Not Found"?

First, verify that you haven't confused similar-looking characters (like the letter 'O' and the number '0', or the letter 'I' and the number '1'). If the spelling is perfectly accurate, a blank result usually indicates that the vehicle is extremely old and its records haven't been digitised by the local RTO yet, or it is a fresh registration where the database sync is still pending.

Q. Does the online status check show whether the policy is Third-Party only or a Comprehensive plan?

The Parivahan portal generally lists a single insurance validity date and the insurer's name, but it may not clearly specify the policy type (Comprehensive vs. Standalone Own Damage vs. Pure Third-Party). To accurately verify the depth of coverage, deductibles, or active add-ons, you must log into the specific insurer's web application using the policy number discovered during the Parivahan lookup.

Q. Can I check if a vehicle has an active commercial transport permit using the same method?

Yes. When you run a vehicle number search on the Parivahan portal, the system returns a comprehensive dashboard of public compliance details. Alongside your insurance expiration date, the screen will explicitly display the validity periods for the vehicle's Fitness Certificate, Road Tax payments, and active national/state Transport Permits (if applicable).

Q. How many times a day can I check vehicle insurance status online?

The Ministry of Road Transport’s Parivahan platform restricts public, unverified lookups to prevent automated data scraping. While standard users can run a few manual queries a day on the web portal by solving CAPTCHA, creating a verified citizen account linked to your mobile number allows for smoother, more consistent tracking of your personal vehicles.
