Liberty General Bike Insurance, Plans, Premium and Review
• 8 min read
Insure Blog

Liberty General bike insurance is issued by Liberty General Insurance Limited, the Indian general insurer backed by the US-based Liberty Mutual group. In May 2026, Liberty Mutual raised its stake in the company from 55.40% to 74%, with the Enam group holding the remaining 26%, as reported by Insurance Business and Angel One. The insurer's name and policies are unchanged.

Liberty publishes more about its two-wheeler claims than many insurers do, including a settlement figure, but its own pages give different garage counts. This review sets out its plans, add-ons, premium range and claim process, with the strengths and limits side by side.

Liberty describes its two-wheeler cover as fully digital, with instant online policy issuance, and states that its roadside assistance add-on allows up to four claims in a policy period.

Who Liberty's Bike Cover Suits

  • Owners who value published claim data. Liberty states a two-wheeler settlement figure on its bike page, which not every insurer does.
  • Riders who forget renewals. The multi-year package removes the yearly renewal and protects NCB from lapsing.
  • Owners of newer bikes. Depreciation, consumables and gap value cover together reduce out-of-pocket costs on claims.

It suits less well an owner who wants the largest cashless network, or roadside assistance without a limit on the number of claims.

Plans and Coverage Options

Liberty's forms and policy wordings page lists these two-wheeler products.

ProductWhat it coversSuits
Two Wheeler Package Policy with add-onsThird-party (TP) and own-damage (OD) cover for one yearMost bikes, renewed every year
Two Wheeler Package Policy, Multi YearPackage cover for two or three years with one premiumOwners who want fewer renewals
Two Wheeler Policy, Bundled CoverLong-term TP with OD, the structure used for new bikesNew bikes
Stand-alone Own Damage Policy for Two-WheelerOD cover only, alongside an existing TP policyBikes bought after September 2018 with long-term TP still running
Motor Liability Only Policy and Two Wheeler Liability Policy, 5 YearsTP cover onlyOlder, low-value bikes, or long-term TP on new bikes

TP cover, compulsory under Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, pays for death or injury to others without an upper limit and for damage to others' property up to ₹1 lakh for two-wheelers. OD cover pays for damage to the bike itself from accident, theft, fire and natural events. Owner-driver personal accident cover of ₹15 lakh is compulsory unless the owner holds a qualifying personal accident policy.

New bikes sold since 1 September 2018 carry a five-year TP policy. On 4 August 2026, the Supreme Court raised the mandatory term to six years for new two-wheelers and directed IRDAI to issue the implementing instructions.

Annual or Multi-Year Package

An annual policy keeps the freedom to switch insurers, change add-ons and reset the IDV each year. Liberty's multi-year package, for two or three years, removes the yearly renewal and the risk of a lapse, but ties the bike to one insurer for longer. For owners who tend to forget renewal dates, the multi-year option can protect the no-claim bonus from lapsing.

Add-ons Liberty Lists for Bikes

Add-onWhat it does
Depreciation coverPays the full cost of replaced parts, without the standard 50% deduction on plastic, rubber and batteries or 30% on fibreglass
Consumables coverPays for oil, nuts, bolts and similar items used in repairs
Gap value coverCovers the gap between the IDV and the invoice value on theft or total loss
Roadside assistanceBreakdown and towing help, up to four claims per policy period
Engine safe coverCovers engine damage from water ingress or oil leakage, which standard OD excludes

Check age limits and prices on the actual quote, since add-on eligibility usually depends on the bike's age.

Premium Range by Bike Type

TP premium is fixed by the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance Base Premium and Liability) Rules, 2022 and is the same at every insurer. OD premium is priced by Liberty, so the table uses the former India Motor Tariff rates as a benchmark, for a bike up to five years old in a Zone A city.

Bike type, exampleAnnual TP (₹)OD benchmark, new bike (₹)OD benchmark, 3-year-old (₹)
Commuter up to 150 cc, Hero Splendor Plus at about ₹77,0007141,249921
150 cc class, Bajaj Pulsar 150 at ₹1,11,1977141,8041,329
150 cc to 350 cc, Bajaj Pulsar NS200 at ₹1,38,3021,3662,3561,736
Above 350 cc, KTM 390 Duke R at ₹3,39,0012,8046,0514,459

The OD benchmark applies the former tariff rates of 1.708% of the Insured Declared Value (IDV) up to 150 cc, 1.793% for 150 cc to 350 cc and 1.879% above 350 cc, to an IDV of 95% of the price for a new bike and 70% for a 3-year-old one. IDV is the most the insurer pays on theft or total loss. Figures exclude GST, no-claim bonus (NCB), add-ons and personal accident cover, and Liberty's actual quote can be higher or lower.

NCB, the discount on OD premium for claim-free years, starts at 20% and reaches 50% after five claim-free years. A 3-year-old Splendor Plus with three claim-free policy years, for example, earns a 35% NCB, which brings its OD benchmark from ₹921 to about ₹599. Liberty also mentions renewal discounts on its bike page, so check how they apply on the renewal quote.

Claim Settlement Ratio and Workshop Network

The claim settlement ratio is the share of claims an insurer settles out of those it receives. Liberty's bike insurance page states that over 91% of all two-wheeler claims were settled in the last financial year. That is the insurer's own figure, and the page does not name the year, so treat it as a broad indicator.

The dependable source is the insurer's annual public disclosure. IRDAI's guidelines require general insurers to publish each year the number of claims paid and repudiated, with percentages, and their claim turnaround times. Because these figures change every year, check the latest disclosure before relying on any ratio.

A settlement figure also counts claims, not rupees. A claim can be settled for less than the amount asked, so the speed of settlement and the amount paid matter as much as the ratio.

Workshop Network

Liberty's homepage states 6,000+ partner garages across India, while its bike insurance page states over 4,300+ network garages. Either way, confirm the list with its garage locator before buying, and check that an authorised service centre for the bike's brand near home is included. At a cashless garage, Liberty pays the workshop directly, and the owner pays only the deductible and costs the policy does not cover. For in-person help, Liberty states that it has 110 offices across India, which can be useful when a claim needs documents submitted or a dispute resolved face to face.

How to Buy or Renew Online

  1. Keep the details ready. Registration number, previous policy and NCB earned.
  2. Get a quote on Liberty's website or LivMobile app. Choose annual, multi-year or standalone OD cover as suits the bike.
  3. Set the IDV and add-ons. Keep the IDV at a fair value, and choose depreciation cover or engine safe only where they suit the bike's age and city.
  4. Check the premium breakdown. TP is fixed by law, so compare OD premium, add-ons and discounts.
  5. Renew before expiry. A lapsed policy may need a pre-inspection, and NCB is generally lost if renewal is more than 90 days after expiry.

Before paying, set Liberty's quote against two-wheeler insurance plans from other insurers on Insure24, keeping the same IDV and add-ons so the comparison is fair.

Claim Process

  1. Register the claim. Call 1800-266-5844 or register on Liberty's website.
  2. File an FIR where needed. It is required for theft, major damage or injury to others.
  3. Take the bike to a network garage for cashless repair, or to any garage for a reimbursement claim.
  4. Inspection. Liberty's surveyor or assessment team inspects the damage before repair.
  5. Settlement. For cashless claims, Liberty pays the garage after repair. For reimbursement, submit the original invoice and payment receipt.
  6. Track the claim. Liberty's website offers online claim status tracking.
